From the comments re-Carp above I can tell cultural attitudes really do affect perceptions.
In the US it seems Carp are not really regarded as true sporting quarry. The phrase “bottom feeders” as used above seems to put the species firmly at the bottom of the evolutionary chain. US anglers are not going to target such a low-status species.
Conversely in UK when I was growing up in the sixties Carp were spoken of in awestruck terms as being highly intelligent and impossible to catch. They were strong and hard-fighting when hooked and many anglers must have got busted up by carp because they were using the light lines angling books told them were the only lines that would fool a fish as wily as the carp.
UK anglers’ favourite species at this time was the roach. A two pound fish was a specimen and fishing light with v.small baits and hooks was mandatory.
Carp fishing was the province of an elite band of obsessive specialists like Richard Walker who designed the Mark IV Carp rod. He based the taper on an old Hardy’s salmon spinning rod. The Mark IV is 10′,two-piece with a decidely easy action going into a full hoop and capable of absorbing the carp’s frantic runs,dives and tail-walks with ease.
