Actually I made that last one up; though I can’t say it looks out of place.
A German story calls for a German word. As we are so hard on our own feckless youth, perhaps we could indulge in a little schadenfreude. Just how thick are German kids?
Interestingly, when it came to spotting the differences between democracy and dictatorships, the brightest were from an area in the former East Germany, while the dimmest came from a region in West Germany. Still, how could half of them not know what Hitler and the Nazis stood for? Did they ever know, or did they, well, just forget? After all, it’s so easily done.
So how did this socio-historical blind spot occur? And why now? Especially when most British 15 to16-year-olds are, if anything, hyper-aware about Hitler and the Nazis.

Stalin’s atrocities were airbrushed out of the official school/college history. At school I learned that Stalin set up the Five Year plans and had to memorize the expansion in percentage terms of steel production. That was it. There was nothing about the huge slave labour/death camp Gulag system, very much the inspiration for Hitlers concentration camps. There was nothing about the famine he artificially caused in the Ukraine where 8 million people died – soldiers in watch towers over fields would shoot dead any starving person picking so much as a grain of wheat from a field. We learned nothing of the ethnic cleansing – millions made to flee their homes at fear of death for Siberia. We learned nothing of the show trials where wholly innocent men and women where physically and physiologically tortured to admit to crimes they never committed.
The list of atrocities goes on, in fact the evilness of Stalin knows no end, its somehow even beyond Hitler as it went on much longer than Hitler and was hidden, even in Russia until long after his death. The cruelty and evilness of Stalin was also more cold and calculating, Hitler seemed to be fueled by emotion, a deep hated, but Stalin seemed to be able to kill millions as if stamping on a bug, just a calculation to improve efficiency.
Stalin ruled over Russia for over 30 years and in that time killed many millions more than Hitler, and yet strangely his atrocities are airbrushed out of official history at school. I can only think it is due to Russia’s eventual siding with the Allies against Hitler in the war – this perhaps created a sense that he helped us beat the Nazi’s therefore it is best not to question too much.
Stalin’s evilness still lives with us. Eastern Europe was devastated by his regimes and they have never fully recovered. The Cold War started under Stalin’s paranoid, aggressively militaristic regime – with its huge bloated military whilst millions were actually starving and literally in rags – so we can thank him for all the atrocities, the threat of nuclear annihilation of planet Earth and all the other fear and atrocities that went with that.
Don’t get me wrong Hitler was a man of such cruelty it is beyond comprehension – but at least I was taught this at school. Stalin on the other hand, every bit as cruel was made out to be something of a good guy. I’ve even noticed people on these comment boards defending Stalin and Stalinst regimes – up to the point of saying they supported his policies. If you said you supported Hitler and his policies you’d be quickly condemned. Both were evil mass murderers – can we not just drop politics for once and admit that killing millions of people, whatever your political persuasion is bad?
I know some people on the left are still contaminated with the mind cancer that is Marxism, and this to a large extend explains why these people like to airbrush out Stalin, or pass him off as an anomaly of the Communist brotherhood. But this is no good, these closed systems of thought, whether by Fascists or Communists, left wingers or right wingers, deny us our humanity. Leaving aside all the cod-philosophical, pseudo-science garbage of Nazi’s and Marxism – we all know that these regimes have unleashed massive evil, to deny ones evil and condemn the others is a cop out – the product of a bigoted mind.
It seems on these comment boards you get kudos if you mention your support of the Communist Manifesto, how different would it be if you admitted your support for Mein Kampf – both these philosophies lead to the same thing – I’ll give Marx some benefit of the doubt in that he perhaps didn’t fully understand the consequences of his philosophy – however saying that Bakunin had warned Marx of the consequences of his system half a century and more before the Bolsheviks put it in to action – so he has to accept some blame – he was aware of the risks.
Both Marx and Hitler shared a common thread – hatred. This hatred ran though more or less idea. Any one disagreeing with Marxism was normally know as “bourgeois” – despite the term having a supposedly “sceindtifc” meaning it became a form of abuse against anyone opposing Marxist policies. Hitler replaced the Marxists hated “bourgeois” with the Jews – both were ideologies founded in hatred of a particular group – salvation would come when that group was destroyed.
Build any philosophy or political system on hatred and Nazism and Stalinism is the ultimate conclusion.”
