There was no motive for the horrific torture murder of Nancy Harris, an elderly Dallas grandmother. To call it “a robbery” is an insult to the victim and her family. The perpetrator simply did for the fun of it.
If the races had been reversed, this would have been the single biggest news story in the United States. Instead it was a “hush crime.” The story was quarantined to local media and websites such as this one.
Jurors on Monday were shown the horrific moment a 76-year-old Dallas grandmother and convenience store clerk was doused in lighter fluid and set on fire during an early morning hold-up.
On the first day of the capital murder trial of Matthew Johnson, one member of the jury covered his mouth and another rubbed his hands together as they watched Nancy Harris frantically try to extinguish the fire that would ultimately kill her.
The shocking surveillance footage came as Harris’ distraught son, Scott Harris, described in testimony the heartbreak he felt as he was told while getting ready for church that his mother had suffered burns to 40 per cent of her body in the senseless attack. She died several days later.
‘She could not communicate,’ Scott Harris said, adding that his mother was sedated.
Johnson, 38, has confessed to the senseless slaying of the mother-of-four on a Sunday morning in May 2012, Garland police say.
Prosecutors are pushing for the death sentence in the disturbing case.
The footage, from a surveillance camera at the Fina Whip-In at the corner of Broadway and Colonel Drive in Garland, shows Johnson pour lighter fluid from a water bottle over Harris’ head.Before he set her alight, he stood behind her taking cigarettes and a lighter as she opened the cash register.
However, as she struggles to open it, Johnson attempts to pull a ring off her right hand but it won’t budge. He licks his finger and tries again but it still won’t move.
He tries once more, this time successfully. He is then seen walking away from the store as an orange glow becomes visible behind him.
The video shows Harris on fire for more than two minutes, according to Dallasnews.com.
She desperately tries to put out the fire in a sink but when she cannot she walks outside to call for help.
According to testimony, two police officers who spotted the blaze and heard Harris’ screams used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

Sazzy – I don’t think the “super cookies” actually cause problems. they just store up to a thousand times (possibly more) the amount of data a normal cookie does, they never expire, they aren’t deleted with normal cookies and they can share information (possibly including passwords) between “enabled” sites, leaving you completely exposed to spammers.
It seems they can also recreate “normal” cookies after (you think) you’ve deleted them.
It is said some sites won’t work without them, but I’ve got Better Privacy set to delete them every day, and I haven’t had a problem.
It’s the normal cookies that can be useful if you like to be automatically logged on when you visit certain sites, so (in my experience at least) you don’t need super cookies, except perhaps while you’re at the kind of sites that plant them, such as YouTube and (potentially) anything that uses Flash.
They’re SPYWARE, but spyware scanners like Ad-Aware and Spybot, excellent though they are, ignore them.
(In case you’re wondering, Better Privacy will NOT delete the “normal” cookies you want to keep, so no problems logging on or using shopping sites.)

Sazzy (and anyone else) – There’s no need to pay for computer protection. When I used $eattle $pyware (Windoze), I used the free version of AVG to keep the viruses away, and Ad-Aware and Spybot to scan for spyware. It’s worth using both because updates always have to follow the appearance of a new threat, but what one misses, the other will probably find.
It’s about three years since I needed protection (when I switched to Linux, which is a lot more secure), so there’s a possibility that things have changed, but I doubt it. Here are the links for anyone who needs them. They’re all free (with paid versions also available) and they kept me safe.

I notice Ad-Aware and Spybot both appear to scan for viruses as well as spyware now, but I’d still recommend installing and using all three.
After updating Spybot, it’s worth clicking on “Immunise” as many times as it takes. This prevents you from visiting known “attack” sites. You don’t want to go to any of those anyway because your computer WILL be attacked if you do, so trust Spybot on this.

Bankrupt solar panel firm took stimulus money, left a toxic mess, says report

A Colorado-based solar company that got hundreds of millions of dollars in federal loan guarantees before going belly-up didn’t just empty taxpayers’ wallets – it left behind a toxic mess of carcinogens, broken glass and contaminated water, according to a new report.
The Abound Solar plant, which got $400 million in federal loan guarantees in 2010, when the Obama administration sought to use stimulus funds to promote green energy, filed for bankruptcy two years later. Now its Longmont, Colo., facility sits unoccupied, its 37,000 square feet littered with hazardous waste, broken glass and contaminated water. The Northern Colorado Business Report estimates it will cost up to $3.7 million to clean and repair the building so it can again be leased.
“As lawyers, regulators, bankruptcy officials and the landlord spar over the case, the building lies in disrepair, too contaminated to lease,” the report stated.
“If a coal, oil or gas company pulled something like that the EPA would send out SWAT teams and the U.S. Marshals to track down the offenders, bankrupt or not.”

The owner of the property tried to force a bankruptcy trustee to clean the facility, but the report said it would “place humans at imminent and significant health risk.” One of the hazards is the presence of cadmium, a cancer-causing agent that is used to produce the film on the solar panels, the report said.
While the loan guarantees exposed taxpayers to hundreds of millions of dollars, the federal government lost a total of $70 million backing the failed company. Unsold inventory which should have been used to offset those losses, including 2,000 solar panels, mysteriously disappeared, according to the National Legal and Policy Center.
“If a coal, oil or gas company pulled something like that the EPA would send out SWAT teams and the U.S. Marshals to track down the offenders, bankrupt or not,” the center said in a report of its own.
President Obama touted Abound in a July 3, 2010 announcement of a $2 billion “investment” in green energy projects.
“The second company is Abound Solar Manufacturing, which will manufacture advanced solar panels at two new plants, creating more than 2,000 construction jobs and 1,500 permanent jobs,” Obama said. “A Colorado plant is already underway, and an Indiana plant will be built in what’s now an empty Chrysler factory. When fully operational, these plants will produce millions of state-of-the-art solar panels each year.”
But less than two years later, the company laid off half of its 400 workers, and then, in the summer of 2012, filed for bankruptcy. It became the third clean-energy company to seek bankruptcy protection after receiving a loan from the Energy Department under the economic stimulus law. California solar panel maker Solyndra and Beacon Power, a Massachusetts energy-storage firm, also declared bankruptcy. Solyndra received a $528 million federal loan, while Beacon Power got a $43 million loan guarantee.
